ATD example deliverable / fictional demonstration

The conclusion is only as good as the record behind it.

A clear answer when the evidence allows. An honest open question when it does not. Here is a fictional example of the kind of record a customer could keep or hand to another technician.

Vehicle concern summary

Intermittently dim trailer marker lamps · Generic truck/trailer combination

INVESTIGATION STATUSOpen | Further isolation required
Reported concern

Trailer marker lamps intermittently appear dim with the lights requested on.

Observed during example test

Output voltage drops substantially when a controlled load is applied; the unloaded reading alone did not expose that behavior.

Established

The test circuit shows excessive voltage loss under the conditions described in the sample notes.

Not established

Which segment is responsible, whether the trailer is also involved, and whether any control module is defective.

Next diagnostic decision

Separate truck, trailer and any adapter, then test the relevant feed and ground paths under appropriate loads using the correct connector orientation.

Behind the cover sheet

The technical record explains how a conclusion was reached.

Illustrative measurement notes

All values below are made up to demonstrate reporting format. They are not specifications.

ConditionReadingStatus
System at rest, no test load12.3 VSample observation
Feed terminal under controlled load9.5 VSample observation
Ground return path, loaded voltage drop0.5 VSample observation

The sample suggests a loaded circuit problem. It does not isolate a failed component or prescribe parts replacement.

Suggested evidence index

  1. Complaint, observed conditions and test plan
  2. As-found connector and harness photographs
  3. Scan/DTC snapshots, if relevant
  4. Instrument setup and measurement records
  5. Applicable manufacturer references
  6. Discriminating tests and remaining questions
  7. Post-work validation, when performed

This example lists supporting records that a real assignment may contain. No hidden attachments or actual measurements are implied.

The practical difference

Another technician can start from the evidence, not from scratch.

A transferable packet should distinguish facts from theories, state what was not checked, preserve useful source records, and identify the next test that would change the decision.
